Young voters ARE THE difference

by rescuetruth on August 31st, 2010

In 2008, young voters comprised approximately 18% of the electorate.  Young voters, which includes those in the 18-29 age range, were very involved in the latest presidential election, which has helped moved America away from the failed policies of the Bush era.  Thanks to the concerted efforts of OFA, and other progressive campaigns during the 2008 election, we have made significant leaps in many areas.

Health care

  • Young adults may stay on their parents’ health care plan until age 26
  • Health care corporations cannot impose annual limits on new policies
  • Health care corporations cannot drop coverage if you get sick
  • Preventative health care services must be provided

Credit card

  • Credit card companies cannot randomly raise interest rates
  • CC companies must give 45 days notice of any significant changes
  • Consumers may opt out or reject certain changes in terms
  • Limitations placed on overage fees
  • Due dates and time frames must be clearly laid out
  • Added protections specifically aimed at college-aged students, whom CC companies often take advantage of

  • Cut taxes for 95% of working families
  • Provided tax cuts to small businesses, first-time homebuyers, and college students

Other accomplishments

  • Ended combat missions in Iraq
  • Spurred job growth with stimulus
  • Passed the historic Tribal Law and Order Act
  • In the Works: Additional help for lower and middle class workers who remain unemployed, and DISCLOSE Act, which prevents foreign and corporate influence in elections

This is by no means a complete list of accomplishments, but it is important to keep in perspective as certain media outlets spew disinformation, and make other attempts to discredit.  While a midterm election might not be as exciting as a presidential election for some, it is just as important, if not more important.  Without Democratic support in the House and Senate, the bills responsible for the the aforementioned landmark accomplishments would never have made it to the president’s desk.  Keep America moving forward, and Rock The Vote!
